9 Songs We Want On Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's Soundtrack

by | May 8, 2017 | Comments

Now that millions of people the world over have heard Cat Stevens “Father and Son” in its entirety for the first time via Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, it’s got us thinking: What should be on the third soundtrack to close out this trilogy? Here’s our 9-song suggested playlist! Hey, James Gunn: Thinking about not having these songs on Vol. 3? Don’t even bother making the movie then! What songs would you include on the Vol. 3 soundtrack?

Spoilers ahead! Read only if you’ve seen the new Guardians and made it through its 18 mid-credits scenes.

1. “Catherine Cares,” Pete Ham

Because Peter Quill, the MCU’s best mama’s boy, deserves only the best in rock song mom tributes, as done by Badfinger’s Pete Ham. And just in time for Mother’s Day. (Hi, mom!)

2. “Portable Radio,” Hall & Oates

From Walkman to Zune, the magic of carrying your music everywhere has never been lost on the Star-Lord. He’ll find his equivalent with Hall & Oates in this disco-lite track, an infectious paean to mobile FM & AM radio.

3. “Borrowed Time,” Styx

Despite being abducted the same year Oliver & Company came out, Quill is never seen listening to anything post-1979. It’s time for him to start taking emotional baby steps into the future, starting with this rock o’ plenty tune which opens with Dennis DeYoung’s clarion call: ‘Don’t look now but here come the ’80s!”

4. “Adam Raised a Cain,” Bruce Springsteen

Bah gawd, that’s Warlock’s music! The shoutout during the credits means Marvel’s Biblical stand-in Adam Warlock is in for Vol. 3 and his introduction (or apocalyptic montage, whichever) needs something like the on-point lyrics of this tortured Boss dirge.

5. “Harmour Love,” Syreeta Wright

Vol. 2 closes with Gamora finally acknowledging an unspoken thing, but she and Quill are going to need a steady stream of big-hearted pop like this to keep the flame alive.

6. “Sky Diver,” Ben Richardson

A perfect hymn to Star-Lord’s sweet spaceship, the Milano, and to banging hot alien hunk-babes in the cockpit. What else is there to look forward to in the future?

7. “Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll,” Vaughan Mason & Crew

The Guardians soundtracks put the ‘cool’ back in cheesy wine cooler music and yacht rock, but it wouldn’t hurt to embrace that other ’70s cultural achievement: disco. Hey, Kevin Feige: Mind spending a few million bucks to see the crew roller skating down Asgard’s rainbow bridge?

8. “Planet Queen,” T. Rex

Original glam king Marc Bolan plunges into deep space carnality and comes out with cosmic daughter in hand. How has T. Rex not been on a Galaxy soundtrack yet?

9. “Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth,” Sparks

Just like it took John McClane three Die Hard movies to get down in his hometown, we could see Star-Lord’s third story returning him to Earth. If that’s so, let’s hear it for this ominous ballad (watch out for shooting guitar solos).
