Anyone expecting season 1 of American Gods to end in a bloody battle was sorely disappointed on Sunday night when episode 8, “Come to Jesus,” aired.

The lack of blood, guts, and gore didn’t stop fans from heaping on praise, though, for the Starz series based on Neil Gaiman’s popular fantasy novel.

Spoiler warning: The following discusses details of American Gods season 1, episode 8.

The episode began with dapper Mr. Nancy (Orlando Jones) holding sexy-story time, telling Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) and Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) the tale of Bilquis (Yetide Badaki), a queen dealing with the angry adversity of men grasping for her power.

Later while extorting Bilquis into the service of the New Gods, Technical Boy (Bruce Langley) sported this bold look:

Goddess Easter/Ostara (Kristin Chenoweth) greeted a number of unexpected — and unwelcome — guests to her holiday party. While Mr. Wednesday was a bit of a disruption, Easter was very glad to meet blushing, “pink chocolate” Shadow Moon.

When Mad Sweeney (Pablo Schreiber) and his copilot Laura Moon (Emily Browning) finally reach their destination, they are disappointed to learn that Easter can’t use her resurrection gifts on Laura. But the moment does inspire Laura to properly interrogate Mad Sweeney.

In the bigger conflict that followed, Wednesday finally reveals his true nature to Shadow, and Shadow becomes a believer, with an assist from Jesus Prime (Jeremy Davies). Easter shows off her god-powers, sapping the earth of its vegetation and depriving manipulative Media (Gillian Anderson) of her Easter bonnet. Wednesday says the world will be replenished when humans literally get on their knees and pray. Frustrated Mr. World (Crispin Glover) declares war.

The cast and creators were tweeting up a storm for most of the day, treating fans to behind-the-scenes photos and calling out their favorite moments.

And viewers were asking for more.

American Gods season 1 can be rewatched on Starz on demand and in the Starz app.
