America's Got Talent Contestant Struck by Flaming Arrow and Other TV News

by | August 4, 2016 | Comments

This week in TV news, Mariah Carey’s docuseries is a reality, Jon Stewart’s new show will be animated, America’s Got Talent had a (literal) misfire, and more!

Variety reported that ABC has given a straight-to-series order for Ten Days in the Valley, the drama series that was shopped around with Demi Moore attached — but now will star Kyra Sedgwick. The drama is Sedgwick’s first series regular role following TNT’s The Closer, which wrapped in 2012 after seven seasons. ABC has ordered 10 episodes of the hour-long drama. No premiere date has been set, but the project will start production in 2017.

Mariah Carey speaks onstage at the 'Mariah's World' panel discussion during the NBCUniversal portion of the 2016 Television Critics Association Summer Tour at The Beverly Hilton Hotel on August 3, 2016 in Beverly Hills, California.

Mariah Carey made a grand entrance onto the TCA stage where she sipped champagne and talked about the details of her new 8-part docuseries Mariah’s World. While discussing her new show, which follows her first European tour in almost 10 years, Carey confirmed that ex-husband Nick Cannon had been filmed during the series, along with her children, and fiance James Packer. Mariah’s World premieres Sunday, December 4th on E!

Not long after Jon Stewart‘s departure from The Daily Show, news surfaced that the beloved comedian would return to television via a four-year production deal with HBO.  At the time details were limited, but at the TCA press tour this past week, HBO programming president Casey Bloys revealed that Stewart’s project is multi-platformed, stating that “The idea is it will be an animated parody of a cable news network with an Onion-like portal.”  According to Bloys, Stewart is establishing an animation studio which will allow him “to comment in real time with what’s happening during the day’s news events.” The show will be structured not only to release short-form content via the premium cable channel’s digital platforms, but also will include a television component; likely a half-hour series. Bloys added that the show is expected to air in the fall… just in time for election season.

Ever watch magic or daredevil acts on the edge of your seat, hoping nothing goes amiss? That nightmare came true on Tuesday during stuntman and show contestant Ryan Stock’s quarterfinals act on America’s Got Talent when he was accidentally struck in the throat by a flaming arrow shot by his fiancee and partner, AmberLynn Walker. As part of the act, Stock had swallowed an object with a target at one end protruding from his mouth. But Walker missed that target in front of a stunned audience and judges, causing a good deal of pain for Stock who, shocked, removed the target and assured host Nick Cannon that he was OK. After being checked out and released by EMTs backstage, Stock went to Twitter to call it “a very unfortunate mechanical failure but I am very fortunate to walk away from it.”
