Andy Serkis Joins Tintin Cast

Gollum stocking up on Loch Lomond?

Nearly a quarter century after he commenced efforts to adapt Herge‘s Adventures of Tintin for American screens, Steven Spielberg has found the first member of his cast.

Variety reports that Andy Serkis — best-known for his work as Gollum in the Lord of the Rings films — has signed on to play an unnamed role in DreamWorks’ planned Tintin trilogy. (The studio has so far only said that Serkis will not be playing Tintin; he’s rumored to be playing the sardonic, whiskey-loving Captain Haddock.)

Spielberg and Peter Jackson are collaborating on the Tintin trilogy, with each director having committed to helming at least one of the installments. From the article:

Films…will be produced in full digital 3-D using performance capture technology. Jackson’s New Zealand-based WETA Digital will provide the f/x work, which will commence before the September start date.

The Tintin deal continues a hot streak for Serkis, whose work in the TV series Longford (included in the AFI’s year-end best-of) was recently nominated for a Golden Globe.
