Meryl Streep and J.J. Abrams Team Up for a TV Series and Other TV News

by | September 8, 2016 | Comments

This week in TV news, Heathers is coming to the small screen, a lot of news is coming from Westros, Meryl Streep is teaming up to do a TV show with J.J. Abrams, and more!

TV Land has announced an order for a pilot based on the original teen cult-classic film, Heathers, which starred Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, and Shannen Doherty. Most interesting, though, is that TV Land is calling this its “first anthology series,” meaning the themes, casts, and story would change from season to season. There aren’t many details yet, but word around school is that the mean girl villains this time around will be a “very different but equally vicious group of Heather.”

Deadline reported that DC drama Black Lightning has landed a pilot production commitment at Fox, with Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl) producing, and Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil (Being Mary Jane) writing and producing. Black Lightning is one of DC Comics’ first African-American superheroes; created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden in 1977.

Game of thrones

Production has begun on the seventh season of HBO’s Emmy-nominated series Game of Thrones – which quickly triggered the rumor mill. True: Harry Potter alum Jim Broadbent has joined the cast, as reported last week. True: Filming returns to Northern Ireland, Spain and Iceland. False: Angela Lansbury will be there. Despite widespread speculation – prayers, hopes, dreams – the 90-year-old Murder, She Wrote star will not appear. In other also-not-happening Game of Thrones news, author George R.R. Martin’s U.S. publisher put an end to talk suggesting that the next installment in the World of Ice and Fire book series, The Winds of Winter, would drop in March 2017. WoIF readers everywhere immediately shake fists at sky.

Meryl Streep and J.J. Abrams are teaming up on the small screen with a new television series for Warner Bros. TV.  The three-time Oscar winner is nearing a deal to star in the adaptation of Nathan Hill’s debut novel The Nix. The acclaimed novel follows a man whose mother reappears after decades and becomes the center of a controversy for allegedly committing an absurd crime. The story is noted to be a sprawling satire that spans from the Midwest to NYC to the 1968 riots in Chicago. Streep, who has focused primarily on a film career — most recently starring in Florence Foster Jenkins and the upcoming Mary Poppins Returns — has not made an appearance on television since 2012’s Web Therapy. Streep is the latest of many A-Listers migrating to the small screen in the era of Peak TV, so yes, lucky us.
