On DVD This Week: John Wick: Chapter 2, The LEGO Batman Movie, South Park, and More

New to DVD this week, we have the second installment of an explosive Keanu Reeves action franchise, a LEGO-fied animated superhero movie, and the latest season of one of the most incisive TV comedies around. Plus we’ve also got a few indies, the final season of a popular show, and a selection from Criterion. Read on for the full list.

South Park: Season 20 (2016) 73%

20 seasons in and still going strong, Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s irreverent animated comedy continues to skewer pop culture through the adventures of Stan, Kyle, Kenny, and Cartman. The season set comes with deleted scenes, commentary tracks, a Comic-Con panel from 2016, and a handful of featurettes.

The Vampire Diaries: Season 8 (2016) 100%

This popular CW drama ended its run a couple of months ago — and it’s currently available on Netflix — but if you want to own it or watch the extras, it’s available this week. It comes with a retrospective special, the show’s 2016 Comic-Con panel, a look at the final season, and deleted scenes.

The Lego Batman Movie (2017) 90%

Will Arnett voices the Caped Crusader in this fast-paced animated film that finds Batman adopting an orphan (Michael Cera) and learning to work with others in order to defeat the Joker (Zach Galifianakis). It comes with a ton of extras, including a number of animated shorts, making-of featurettes, deleted scenes, and more.

John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) 89%

Keanu Reeves returns as the headshot-happy hitman, who is forced to honor an oath from his past and finds himself targeted by every other assassin in the process. Special features include a commentary track with Reeves and director Chad Stahelski, deleted scenes, a look at the fight choreography, rehearsal footage, and a lot of other fun featurettes.

Frantz (2017) 91%

François Ozon’s period drama centers on the unlikely bond that develops between a World War I veteran and a young woman grieving over the death of her fiancé. Information on special features is currently unavailable.

3 Generations (2017) 32%

Naomi Watts, Susan Sarandon, and Elle Fanning star in this drama about three generations of one family living under one roof and dealing with issues of sexual identity. It comes with deleted and extended scenes.

Anna Kendrick and Craig Robinson headline this ensemble comedy about a group of wedding guests seated at a table together who begin to reveal secrets to each other. Special features include deleted scenes and a few featurettes.

Madhouse (1981)

Another week, another unearthed slasher from the annals of horror history polished by Arrow Video. This time, it’s 1981’s Madhouse (aka And When She Was Bad aka Flesh and the Beast) which mixes the genre’s passing curiosities of the time: power drill kills, mean dogs, and the worst birthday parties imaginable for a growing girl. The new release comes with new interviews with the cast and crew, alternate opening titles, and more.

Lastly, from the Criterion Collection, we have Nicholas Ray’s debut, a noir starring Farley Granger and Cathy O’Donnell as an outcast couple in love and fleeing from both the authorities and a band of outlaws. Extras include a commentary track featuring Granger and film historian Eddie Muller, new conversations with film critics, and more.
