"Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong" About... Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Brooding and faithful masterpiece or overstuffed and self-serious mess? It's Dark Knight Vs. Man of Steel and Tomatometer Vs. Audience Score in our most controversial podcast ep yet.

What was the bigger battle in 2016: The Dark Knight vs. the Man or Steel – or the Tomatometer vs. the Audience Score? On a little website called Rotten Tomatoes, those two competitions were pretty evenly matched when it came to a certain follow-up to Man of Steel.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is not the kind of movie people feel “meh” about. When it comes to this superhero smackdown from DC maestro Zack Snyder, you’re likely either all in or all the way out. (Don’t believe us? Ask a buddy what they feel about “Martha” next time you’re having beers.) That divide is represented in the scores for the film: BvS, as it’s now known, is Rotten at 29% on the Tomatometer – critics largely thought it was overwrought and over-long – but Fresh at 62% according to the Audience Score, with users loving the epic battles and the chance to see several of their favorite characters duking it out on the big screen. Both sides were pretty unanimous on Batfleck: He was awesome.

Almost from the moment we announced our new podcast, Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong (A Podcast from Rotten Tomatoes), requests started flowing in for an episode on BvS. And so… our latest episode tackles Snyder’s brooding battle flick, digging into controversial casting decisions, its faithfulness to the comics, Snyder’s very particular style – and his ultimate edition of the film – and, yes, the Martha moment. Joining hosts Mark Ellis and Jacqueline Coley is someone who feels Rotten Tomatoes is very wrong about Batman v Superman: actor, host, and DC mega fan Mike Kalinowski. Will he convince us that the movie is a misunderstood masterpiece? Tune in to find out.

Check in every Thursday for a new episode of Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong (A Podcast From Rotten Tomatoes). Each week, hosts Jacqueline and Mark and guests go deep and settle the score on some of the most beloved – and despised – movies and TV shows ever made, directly taking on the statement we hear from so many fans: “Rotten Tomatoes is wrong.”

If you have a suggestion for a movie or show you think we should do an episode on, let us know in the comments, or email us at rtiswrong@rottentomatoes.com.

Meet the hosts

Jacqueline Coley is an editor at Rotten Tomatoes, with a focus on awards and indie coverage but with a passion for everything, from the MCU to musicals and period pieces. Coley is a regular moderator at conventions and other events, can be seen on Access Hollywood and other shows, and will not stand Constantine slander of any kind. Follow Jacqueline on Twitter: @THATjacqueline.

Mark Ellis is a comedian and contributing editor for Rotten Tomatoes. He currently hosts the Rotten Tomatoes series Versus, among others, and can be seen co-hosting the sports entertainment phenomenon Movie Trivia Schmoedown. His favorite Star Wars movie is Jedi (guess which one!), his favorite person is actually a dog (his beloved stepdaughter Mollie), and – thanks to this podcast – he’s about to watch Burlesque for the first time in his life.
